During the early 1990s James Redway Furniture Makers attempted to enter the wholesale market of furniture sales. We started attending the Furniture Market At Valley Forge, PA, which was attended by a large number of fine furniture makers. We were being buried by the larger dealers, and found that most of the buyers were searching for price rather than quality. We tried to come up with new methods of selling our furniture. In 1994, we produced this wholesale video catalog. Our goal was to have stores make this video available to their customers. The customers could take the video home to view it without having to endure any pressure from an annoying salesperson, then, return the tape to the store, and order the pieces they liked. The whole point was to go beyond the printed catalog, so the customer could see all the pieces we make, without the store needing to carry our entire inventory in stock. It was a great idea. We thought it would be very popular, except for the fact, that while we were busy making this video, Netscape was busy releasing their graphic browser which changed the way the public used the Internet. Our video was obsolete the moment it was made. The very next year, we gave up on this video and started our website. Our website was born in the Fall of 1995.
The video is still relevant to many of the pieces we make. Some pieces shown, we no longer make, because they were not popular. Like any business, you try different things, and not everything works. The streaming video here on the net is not perfect, but if you have a good connection, it will run fairly well. It has some pleasant music, and I still like to watch it from time-to-time. The total running time is around 50 minutes.
